Every year, thousands of people dip their toes, their hearts, and their whole shivering selves into freezing water for Special Olympics — and this year, I decided to join the frosty fun. As the Local Coordinator for Special Olympics in Delaware County, I get to witness magic every week: courage that doesn’t brag, joy that doesn’t wait for perfect timing, and athletes who show up with more heart than any thermometer could measure.

So why am I doing this plunge?

Because the athletes I serve dive into life every single day. They leap into challenges with grit, humor, and a spark that reminds me that inclusion isn’t a buzzword — it’s a promise. And if they can show up bravely in every arena, then I can certainly jump into some water that… let’s be honest… has no business being that cold.

I’m plunging for the athletes who light up gym floors and bocce courts. I’m plunging for the families who trust us with their loved ones’ dreams. I’m plunging for advocacy, equality, and a world that sees ability before anything else.
